A "Beary" Fun Evening

Our newest little photographer
A few weeks ago after Brent and I got off work, we headed up on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a few pictures. We first stopped by Twenty Minute Cliff where Brent got a few shots. While we were there, Brent ran into one of the photographers, William, who also posts on Flickr who lives near our area. We visited there a few minutes and then we were following him up the Parkway to the next possible spot to shoot. All of a sudden, it was pretty foggy and he just stopped in the middle of the road. We thought he was trying to decide about getting a shot with the fog. We looked a little more closely and suddenly figured out exactly why he stopped quickly. Just in the top of a tree was this little fella...

He was, as you can see, literally in the top of a tree. We could hear the little branches snapping as he was moving along in the tree. I had no idea bears could climb this high!

Here are Rachel and Mr. William checking out the bear. Bekah just kept pointing at the tree and saying "Bear, Mom" over and over again.
I heard someone say they thought the Mama Bear was in the woods across the road and behind us. We watched this little bear for a really long time and saw no sign of Mama Bear. William was telling us that this little guy was around a year old and in May, that the Mama Bears let the little bears this age go on their own. So possibly this little bear was getting some extra time by himself in preparation for going out on his own. Either way, I kept a really close eye out for his Mama Bear!
We have enjoyed many trips along the Parkway but never have had a chance to see a bear this (relatively) close or for this long. It was a "beary" neat experience.
